ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Italy have signed a new agreement exempting holders of diplomatic passports from visa requirements, marking a significant step toward strengthening bilateral relations and facilitating official travel between the two countries.

The agreement was signed in Rome by Pakistan’s Ambassador to Italy, Ali Javed, and Italy’s Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia. The development is being viewed as an important milestone in Pakistan-Italy relations and a reflection of the growing cooperation between the two friendly nations.

Prior to the signing ceremony, officials from both sides reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral ties. Discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in key sectors, including trade, culture, science and technology, education, labour mobility, and defence cooperation. They also exchanged views on cooperation at international forums such as the United Nations and the European Union.

According to officials, the visa-free agreement for diplomatic passport holders demonstrates mutual trust and friendship and will further improve official exchanges. The agreement is expected to strengthen diplomatic engagement and support broader efforts to expand cooperation in various fields.

Pakistan and Italy already enjoy longstanding relations supported by multiple agreements and memoranda of understanding. Academic collaboration between universities, research institutions, and think tanks from both countries has also contributed to stronger people-to-people contacts and knowledge sharing.

Labour mobility remains an important area of cooperation. Pakistan’s Embassy in Rome has previously highlighted employment opportunities for Pakistani workers, including a reported quota of 10,500 jobs in Italy. The initiative is expected to create new avenues for skilled and semi-skilled workers seeking overseas employment.

Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari extended warm greetings to Italian President Sergio Mattarella and the people of Italy on the occasion of Italy’s Republic Day, celebrated annually on June 2. In his message, President Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to further deepening ties with Italy based on mutual respect, cooperation, and shared aspirations for peace and prosperity.

He also appreciated Italy’s constructive role within the European Union and expressed confidence that Pakistan-Italy relations would continue to grow in scope and depth, contributing to regional stability, economic cooperation, and stronger diplomatic engagement in the years ahead.
