ISLAMABAD: Ishaq Dar, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, has stated that the country is actively engaging in diplomatic efforts to help ease mounting tensions in the Middle East.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Dar said recent developments have significantly worsened an already delicate regional environment. He emphasized that Pakistan is calling on all parties involved to show restraint and prevent any further escalation of the conflict.

He observed that the situation deteriorated despite ongoing diplomatic initiatives aimed at achieving a peaceful and negotiated settlement. Dar questioned the abrupt escalation that has now involved several countries. He mentioned reports indicating that Saudi Arabia had responded to Iran in self-defence, adding that no casualties have been reported so far.

Referring to a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif a day earlier, Dar expressed Pakistan’s serious concern over violations of international law and established diplomatic norms, particularly incidents involving the targeting of state and government leaders. He warned that such actions undermine long-standing international conventions and further destabilize the region.

The foreign minister reiterated Pakistan’s consistent stance that dialogue and diplomacy must remain the primary tools for resolving disputes. He urged all nations to uphold the principles of the UN Charter, respect sovereignty and territorial integrity, and adhere to international humanitarian law.

Dar also recalled a telephone conversation with Abbas Araghchi on February 28, during which he conveyed Pakistan’s condemnation of the attacks and stressed the need for restraint. Although the Iranian foreign minister responded positively, Dar noted that tensions have yet to subside.

He added that he has been in contact with several foreign ministers, highlighting a shared belief that diplomatic engagement is the only sustainable solution—not only for the Middle East but for conflicts across the globe.

Concluding his remarks, Dar emphasized the importance of utilizing international forums and mechanisms to restore adherence to the principles established in the post–World War II global order.
