LAHORE: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif yesterday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to using Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a key driver for economic development and digital transformation in Pakistan.
Chairing a high-level meeting in Lahore on the promotion of AI, the Prime Minister said that promoting Information Technology and AI is a top priority. He emphasized that the government will ensure effective implementation of the national AI policy to accelerate the shift toward a digital economy.
PM Shehbaz highlighted the need to focus on data protection, data sovereignty, and responsible use of AI technologies. “These principles must guide all AI-related developments,” he said, directing authorities to ensure secure and ethical use of AI.
To facilitate implementation, the Prime Minister ordered the formation of a Steering Committee dedicated to AI promotion and oversight. Officials also briefed the meeting on steps being taken at the government level, including the formation of an AI Advisory Panel composed of leading experts.
The PM’s Special Assistant on Innovation and Digital Development earlier announced the establishment of AI and R&D centres under the Prime Minister’s vision to build a modern, AI-enabled Pakistan.
Federal ministers and key government stakeholders, including Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, IT Minister Shaza Fatima, Minister of State Bilal Azhar Kayani, and Special Assistant Bilal Bin Saqib, attended the meeting along with senior officials and AI specialists.
The government aims to leverage AI across sectors to boost productivity, efficiency, and innovation for sustainable economic growth.
