ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has confirmed its participation in forthcoming Iran–United States talks scheduled to take place in Istanbul, aimed at reducing escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington. The Foreign Office stated on Tuesday that Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will represent Pakistan in the discussions.

The talks, expected to reach a key phase on Friday, will also bring together several influential regional countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. According to a regional official quoted by Reuters, the central objective of the meetings is to prevent conflict and lower rising tensions in the region.

While details about the exact structure of the talks remain uncertain, officials have stressed that continued dialogue is essential to avoid further escalation. The diplomatic effort comes at a time of heightened concern in the Middle East, particularly following the deployment of a US aircraft carrier group to the region amid ongoing anti-government protests in Iran.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian confirmed that he has authorised Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to engage in nuclear-related negotiations with the United States, provided the discussions take place without threats or excessive demands and remain aligned with Iran’s national interests.

In a recent interview, Araghchi said a nuclear agreement is possible if the United States genuinely seeks to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He added that Tehran expects sanctions relief as part of any potential deal.

US President Donald Trump has expressed hope for a negotiated settlement but has warned of serious consequences if diplomacy fails. Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has cautioned that any US military action could spark a wider regional conflict.

Turkiye has played a leading role in facilitating the diplomatic initiative, with Araghchi holding meetings with officials in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Jordan have reportedly assured Iran that their airspace and territories will not be used for any military action against it, underscoring a shared emphasis on diplomacy and regional stability.
