ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has called on the international community to take urgent and resolute action to halt what it described as Israel’s “brutal and illegal” military campaign in Gaza.

During a UN Security Council briefing on the Middle East and the Palestinian issue, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, demanded an immediate, unconditional, and lasting ceasefire. He also urged for Israel’s full withdrawal from Gaza, the release of all hostages, and unrestricted humanitarian access to the besieged territory.

Ambassador Asim welcomed the recent High-Level Conference on the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian conflict and the implementation of the Two-State Solution, calling it a positive step. However, he stressed that real progress would require concrete, coordinated international actions aimed at establishing lasting peace and stability in the region.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s longstanding stance that sustainable peace in the Middle East hinges on a credible political roadmap leading to the creation of an independent, sovereign, and contiguous Palestinian state, based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif (Jerusalem) as its capital.

Meanwhile, a report by UNICEF revealed alarming statistics: on average, 28 Palestinian children are dying each day in Gaza due to Israeli airstrikes, food shortages, and lack of humanitarian aid. The agency emphasized the urgent need for food, clean water, medical supplies, and most importantly—an immediate ceasefire. UNICEF stated: “Children in Gaza are dying in classrooms. They need protection. They need peace. They need a ceasefire — now.”
