ISLAMABAD: The government of Pakistan is reviewing plans to introduce work-from-home arrangements and shift educational institutions to online classes as part of a broader fuel conservation strategy. The move comes amid fears of oil supply disruptions in the Middle East following rising tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, which have affected shipping activity through the key global oil route, the Strait of Hormuz.

According to official sources, authorities are preparing a national action plan to reduce fuel consumption. As part of the proposed measures, offices may adopt remote work policies similar to those implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. The government is also considering shifting schools and universities to online learning during March to limit transportation-related fuel use.

Under the proposals being discussed, companies could allow employees to work from home two days a week, while offices may operate with reduced staff to ensure only essential workers remain on-site.

Officials are also reviewing additional steps such as promoting ride-sharing among employees to cut down fuel consumption. Telecom and IT firms are being encouraged to adopt flexible working arrangements that allow employees to work remotely for part of the week.

During a briefing to a Senate committee, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb stated that the country currently has petrol and diesel reserves sufficient for about 28 days, around 10 days of crude oil, and nearly 15 days of LPG supplies.

Authorities are also considering petroleum conservation measures similar to those used during the pandemic. Another proposal under review involves setting fuel prices on a weekly basis to discourage hoarding by dealers, especially during periods when price increases are anticipated.
