ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the European Union have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation and strengthening strategic ties during the 8th Pakistan-EU Strategic Dialogue held in Islamabad. The high-level meeting highlighted growing collaboration in trade, investment, security, climate resilience, and regional stability, further enhancing Pakistan-EU relations.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar addressed a joint press conference with Kaja Kallas, describing the dialogue as the highest institutionalized platform between Pakistan and the European Union. He said both sides reviewed progress under the Pakistan-EU Strategic Engagement Plan 2019 and discussed ways to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.
Dar noted that the European Union remains one of Pakistan’s most significant trade partners. He highlighted the importance of the GSP+ framework, which has helped boost Pakistan exports to European markets and strengthen economic ties. Discussions focused on increasing trade and investment opportunities while promoting sustainable economic growth.
The two leaders also exchanged views on major regional and international developments, including tensions involving the United States and Iran, the situation in Afghanistan, developments in South Asia, and security concerns in the Middle East and Europe.
During the talks, Dar reiterated Pakistan’s position on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and called for a peaceful resolution in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. He also referred to the recent supplementary award by the Court of Arbitration regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, saying it confirmed limitations on India’s ability to control western rivers covered under the agreement.
On regional security, Dar raised concerns about militant groups operating from Afghan territory and their continued attacks against Pakistan.
Kaja Kallas described Pakistan as a major regional power and an important partner for the European Union. She emphasized that the EU remains Pakistan’s largest export destination and noted that Pakistan is the leading beneficiary of the GSP+ scheme worldwide.
Kallas also praised Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in easing tensions between the United States and Iran. Both sides expressed determination to expand cooperation in clean energy, climate resilience, digital infrastructure, migration, mobility, education, and people-to-people exchanges, including the Erasmus Mundus scholarship programme, where Pakistani students continue to rank among the top beneficiaries.
