GILGITBALTISTAN: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday emphasized the urgent need to tackle climate change during his visit to flood-affected areas of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), where recent torrential rains and flash floods have resulted in loss of lives and severe infrastructure damage.
Speaking to the media, PM Shehbaz expressed deep regret over the devastation caused by the rains and reaffirmed the federal government's support to the GB administration. He stressed that climate change remains a persistent threat to Pakistan, recalling the catastrophic floods of 2022 and instructing the Ministry of Climate Change to intensify its response to emerging environmental challenges.
While chairing a high-level meeting in Diamer to review losses from rains and cloudbursts, the PM noted that despite contributing minimally to global emissions, Pakistan remains among the top ten countries most affected by climate change. He urged for robust participation in international climate forums to secure funding for disaster-resilient infrastructure.
The premier was briefed on relief efforts, including Pakistan Army and civil rescue operations that evacuated stranded tourists from Babusar Valley and other affected areas. He also discussed development and law and order with GB’s chief minister and announced the establishment of Daanish Schools in the region.
Meanwhile, the PMD forecasted another spell of heavy rainfall across GB and AJK from August 5–7. July 2025 saw 23% above-average rainfall nationwide, with GB recording 20.2mm — 52% higher than normal.
