ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday was briefed on a targeted petrol price relief plan aimed at motorcycle and rickshaw users, as the government steps up efforts to cushion the impact of rising fuel costs on low- and middle-income groups in Pakistan.
Chairing a high-level meeting to review the impact of the Middle East crisis on petroleum prices, fuel supply, and national reserves, the prime minister said the government remains committed to providing maximum relief despite economic challenges. He emphasized that digital systems would be introduced to ensure transparent and direct delivery of fuel subsidies to deserving citizens.
Officials informed the meeting that petrol relief for motorcycles and rickshaws is being designed to benefit daily wage earners who rely heavily on these modes of transport. The plan includes improved registration systems in coordination with provincial governments to identify eligible beneficiaries quickly.
The prime minister highlighted that strict austerity measures had been implemented to create fiscal space for public relief. Government expenditures and development spending have been reduced, while nearly 60 percent of official vehicles have been taken off the road to cut fuel usage and costs.
He reiterated that proposals to increase petrol prices were consistently rejected to protect citizens from inflationary pressure. Savings generated from these austerity steps are now being redirected toward targeted fuel subsidies and relief programs.
During the briefing, officials confirmed that Pakistan has maintained stable fuel supplies despite global volatility triggered by geopolitical tensions. Strategic decisions taken in time helped prevent any disruption in petroleum availability across the country.
The meeting also reviewed fuel conservation strategies and future policy options to manage energy demand effectively. An Intelligence Bureau audit report on the implementation of the prime minister’s fuel-saving campaign was presented, highlighting progress and areas for improvement.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also noted that Pakistan is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to promote regional peace, which remains critical for stabilizing global oil markets and ensuring long-term economic relief.
