ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the newly announced Iran-US ceasefire and invited both countries to hold peace talks in Islamabad on April 10, 2026. The move came after former US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire agreement with Iran aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East.
In a message shared on X, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the ceasefire and called it a wise and positive step. He said Pakistan was ready to host talks between the United States and Iran to help both sides reach a final peace agreement. The proposed “Islamabad Talks” are expected to focus on ending the Iran-US conflict and restoring stability in the region.
The Pakistan prime minister said both Iran and the US had shown political wisdom by agreeing to a temporary truce. He added that the world needed peace, especially after weeks of violence linked to the Iran Israel war and the US attacks on Iran.
Donald Trump said the Iran ceasefire would remain in place for two weeks. According to Trump, the agreement depends on Iran temporarily ending its blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is one of the most important oil shipping routes in the world and carries nearly 20 percent of global oil supplies.
Earlier, Shehbaz Sharif had asked Trump to delay his deadline for Iran by two weeks. He also appealed to Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz during the same period as a sign of goodwill. Pakistan believes the two-week window could create a chance for diplomacy and peace negotiations.
Trump also claimed that Iran had submitted a 10-point proposal that could become the basis of a long-term peace deal. Meanwhile, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq announced it would suspend its activities for two weeks.
The latest Iran-US ceasefire news has raised hopes across the Middle East that the Islamabad Talks could help prevent a wider regional war and bring lasting peace.
