ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting solar energy in Pakistan, stating that the ongoing solarization wave would not be discouraged. Speaking at the launch of the “Apna Meter; Apni Reading” mobile app, developed by the Ministry of Energy (Power Division), he praised the initiative as a revolutionary step toward power sector reform and consumer empowerment.

The prime minister highlighted that Pakistan is among the few countries rapidly adopting solar energy, which is the most cost-effective way to generate electricity. He termed the new app a vital reform that will help reduce overbilling and increase transparency in electricity consumption. The app’s availability in five regional languages, he added, would enhance coordination and harmony among provinces.

The launch event was attended by federal ministers, members of parliament, and senior officials. PM Shehbaz acknowledged the consistent reform efforts led by the Ministry of Energy over the past year, including merit-based appointments in DISCOs and actions taken against corruption in the power sector.

He also noted the successful negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), which resulted in a reduction of the electricity tariff to Rs7.41 per unit for households. In addition, he highlighted talks with banks aimed at resolving the circular debt issue.

The prime minister announced the elimination of the PTV fee from electricity bills to provide further relief to consumers. He pointed out two major challenges: electricity theft, which costs the country Rs500 billion annually, and reduced electricity consumption due to increased solar adoption despite high generation levels. He assured that the government is working to address these issues and reduce tariffs for both industrial and residential users.

Energy Minister Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari emphasized the use of technology to combat overbilling and enhance service delivery. He said the new app hands control over meter readings to consumers, significantly reducing billing errors and allowing billions in reimbursements for overcharged amounts.
