ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has departed for Egypt to participate in the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit, a high-level international gathering aimed at finalizing and signing a peace agreement to end the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The summit, taking place in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm El-Sheikh, will be co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and U.S. President Donald Trump, following weeks of intense diplomatic engagement. These efforts were initiated on the sidelines of the **UN General Assembly** session last month.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Sharif is visiting at the joint invitation of both leaders and will be accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and other senior cabinet members.
Sharif’s attendance underscores Pakistan’s firm and longstanding support for the Palestinian cause, including the right to self-determination and efforts toward achieving lasting peace in the Middle East. His presence also signals Islamabad’s desire to contribute to regional stability through dialogue and diplomacy.
Over 20 world leaders are expected to attend the summit, including top representatives from the UN, United Kingdom, France Italy, and Spain. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez have confirmed their participation. French President Emmanuel Macron is also scheduled to attend.
Notably, Israel will not participate in the summit, although it remains a central party to the peace agreement being finalized. The agreement aims to address the escalating conflict in Gaza and lay the groundwork for a sustainable ceasefire and humanitarian relief.
The summit is set to begin tomorrow, Tuesday morning, where leaders will sign the proposed agreement and hold high-level talks on the broader roadmap for peace in the region.
