ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday urged a nationwide shift to electric vehicles (EVs), emphasizing that the adoption of eco-friendly transport could help conserve Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves amid rising global oil prices.
Addressing a ceremony for the provision of electric vehicles to the Islamabad Capital Traffic Police, the prime minister highlighted that such initiatives should be replicated across all law enforcement agencies and provinces to maximize energy-saving benefits. The ceremony marked the delivery of 15 battery-powered electric vehicles, with additional units set to be inducted soon.
Shehbaz Sharif termed the initiative “significant,” noting that the deployment of EVs would contribute positively to conserving foreign exchange by reducing reliance on imported petrol and diesel. The prime minister called for wider adoption of electric vehicles under the government’s broader energy-saving policy framework.
The move aligns with Pakistan’s ongoing focus on fuel economy and the promotion of electric vehicles, a policy that began prior to the current regional energy crises. Officials noted that procurement and deployment of EVs are part of a strategic plan to encourage energy-efficient alternatives in both public and private sectors.
The provision of eco-smart vehicles to the Islamabad Capital Traffic Police demonstrates practical steps taken by the government to reduce fuel consumption, emissions, and operational costs for public agencies. Battery-powered EVs eliminate the use of petrol and diesel, offering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative.
Government officials emphasized that replicating such energy-saving measures nationwide could help Pakistan reduce dependence on fossil fuels, stabilize the national economy, and promote sustainable transport solutions. The prime minister encouraged other departments and provincial governments to adopt similar initiatives for their vehicle fleets.
The EV rollout also forms part of Pakistan’s commitment to modernizing transport infrastructure, improving fuel efficiency, and promoting renewable energy solutions. Authorities said these steps would support long-term economic stability while reducing environmental impact.
The prime minister’s remarks underscore the importance of EV adoption for Pakistan’s energy strategy, highlighting both financial savings and ecological benefits as key drivers for national policy.
