LAHORE: Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) launched a crackdown on tax defaulters, seizing financial records of prominent fast-food chains, cafes, and restaurants in Lahore, Gujranwala, and Sargodha over alleged discrepancies in tax payments.

Officials said enforcement teams also inspected marquees and eateries in Gujranwala, Rahimyar Khan, and Bahawalpur. Documents from four marquees, five cafes, and six restaurants were taken for further investigation.

PRA warned that heavy fines will be imposed on businesses found guilty of collecting sales tax from customers but failing to deposit it into the government treasury. To ensure province-wide compliance, special enforcement teams have been formed to recover outstanding dues from non-paying entities.

The authority highlighted a notable increase in tax revenue collection since the start of the current fiscal year compared to the previous year. PRA officials emphasized that the Punjab government has not introduced any new taxes nor increased existing rates during the current fiscal year.

The crackdown reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening tax compliance and curbing evasion in key sectors, including hospitality and event management. Businesses are being urged to maintain transparent records to avoid penalties and ensure smooth operations.

PRA officials assured that investigations will continue, and further enforcement measures may follow based on findings, signaling a strict approach toward tax irregularities across the province.

The move is expected to boost revenue collections and reinforce accountability, sending a clear message to defaulters that tax evasion will not be tolerated.
