ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari presided over a high-level consultative meeting at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Thursday to address Pakistan’s pressing economic and energy challenges. The session aimed to review the national situation amidst global oil supply constraints and the continuous rise in petroleum prices. This significant gathering brought together the top civil and military leadership to strategize on regional security developments and their direct impact on the country’s financial outlook.
The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and Deputy Prime Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also participated alongside federal ministers from the finance, energy, interior, and economic affairs sectors. The diverse attendance underscored the urgency of creating a unified national response to the current fiscal pressures.
During the briefing, officials presented various measures intended to stabilize petroleum prices and mitigate the ripple effects of rising fuel costs on other essential sectors. A primary focus was placed on maintaining strict fiscal discipline through newly proposed austerity initiatives. The leadership discussed the management of inflationary pressures which have been exacerbated by global market volatility and regional instability.
Special attention was given to the intersection of energy planning and food security. The participants reviewed how regional developments might influence Pakistan’s security framework and economic stability. In light of these challenges, President Zardari emphasized the necessity of achieving a national consensus and fostering stronger institutional coordination to protect public interests.
To further manage the crisis, the meeting called for the launch of public awareness campaigns. These initiatives will encourage citizens to reduce fuel consumption, utilize public transport more frequently, and adopt shared ride systems. By aligning economic management with energy and security considerations, the government hopes to navigate the current global constraints effectively. The session concluded with a commitment to prioritize national stability while safeguarding the welfare of the general population during these testing times.
