LAHORE: The Punjab government imposed Section 144 across the province for 10 days effective immediately today, in response to credible security threats.

According to a notification issued by the Secretary of the Home Department, the decision was made following intelligence reports from law enforcement agencies warning of a serious and imminent threat to public peace, safety of life, and property.

The reports pointed to potential terrorist activities involving groups such as India’s RAW, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). Authorities also expressed concern over political and sectarian elements possibly staging demonstrations or gatherings that could disturb public order.

To mitigate the threat, the government has banned public assemblies, processions, sit-ins, the carrying of weapons, the use of loudspeakers, and the distribution of provocative material for the duration of the 10-day period.

The Home Department stated that these measures are necessary to maintain law and order and to prevent any untoward incident amid the volatile security situation.

This province-wide imposition follows a similar move by the Rawalpindi administration a day earlier, which enforced Section 144 for four days. That decision was taken after Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) announced its “Aqsa March” towards the US Embassy in Islamabad, protesting American support for Israeli actions in Gaza.

The Rawalpindi order also included a ban on pillion riding, public protests, and gatherings.

Punjab authorities have urged the public to cooperate and refrain from participating in any illegal gatherings during the restriction period to ensure their safety and the safety of others.

Security agencies remain on high alert, and further measures may be implemented if the situation escalates.
