ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has shared alarming figures on the widespread destruction caused by recent monsoon rains and flooding across Pakistan.

Between June 26 and July 17, 178 people lost their lives in rain-related incidents, while 491 others were injured nationwide. Punjab was the worst affected, reporting 103 fatalities, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 38 deaths, Sindh with 20, and Balochistan with 16.

Within the last 24 hours alone, 54 people have died and 227 sustained injuries in various rain-induced accidents across the country. The NDMA attributed the high number of casualties primarily to flash floods, along with incidents involving collapsing structures and other rain-triggered hazards.

Meanwhile, persistent heavy rainfall continues to affect numerous cities, easing the extreme heat but bringing with it severe challenges. In Rawalpindi, the downpour has disrupted daily life, prompting officials to declare a district-wide local holiday.

Urban flooding has inundated roads and neighborhoods, while water levels in the Nullah Leh canal have risen sharply. Authorities have issued evacuation warnings for residents in low-lying areas due to the risk of overflow.

The Gawalmandi and Katarian bridges are witnessing dangerously high water levels, raising concerns of mass evacuations if the situation escalates. With streets submerged and access routes blocked, the public is struggling to cope with worsening conditions.

The NDMA continues to monitor the evolving weather situation and has urged citizens to take precautionary measures as further rainfall is expected.
