KARACHI: Authorities have imposed a complete ban on the sale and use of laser lights in the vicinity of Jinnah International Airport for two months, citing aviation safety concerns. The restriction, issued under Section 144 by Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi, will be enforced from May 6 to July 5, 2025.

The decision follows rising concerns over the potential hazards laser beams pose to pilots during critical phases of flight, such as take-off and landing. The official notification warns that laser lights can impair pilots’ vision, significantly increasing the risk of aviation accidents.

“Laser beams may affect pilots’ eyesight, especially during crucial moments like landing and take-off,” the notice stated, emphasizing the potential for serious air traffic incidents. To ensure full compliance, local police stations have been instructed to take strict action against any violations.

The ban applies to all areas surrounding the city’s airports and aims to prevent disruptions to air traffic and enhance the safety of both passengers and crew.

This move is part of a broader safety initiative across Karachi. Earlier, similar restrictions under Section 144 were implemented in the SITE and Keamari districts to control traffic and maintain public order. These included bans on encroachments, dumping of debris, and movement of heavy vehicles during daytime hours.

Authorities have stressed that enforcement will be stringent and that violators will face legal action. The temporary bans are part of ongoing efforts to improve urban management and ensure public and aviation safety.
