ISLAMABAD: The ongoing rift between the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) intensified on Tuesday as PPP Vice President Senator Sherry Rehman cautioned the ruling party about potential difficulties in the Senate without the PPP's clear support.

In an private interview Senator Rehman emphasized that the PPP's inclusion on the treasury benches should not be taken for granted. She stated, "If you want to tear apart the whole coalition... don't think that we will keep you stable no matter what you do." She further warned, "You will need Bilawal and Asif Zardari again." Rehman highlighted that the PPP remains the largest party in the Senate, underscoring the challenges the PML-N could face without their support.

The tensions between the two parties have been escalating over various issues, including flood compensation and water rights related to the Cholistan canals project. The PPP, which governs Sindh, has expressed strong disapproval of remarks made by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who leads the federal government.

Rehman criticized the PML-N's approach, stating that the issue was not about provincial rivalry but about the federation and the people. She pointed out that 6.5 million individuals were affected by recent floods and questioned why the PPP's suggestion to provide aid through the Benazir Income Support Programme was being politicized.

Addressing criticisms of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari's tenure as foreign minister, Rehman reminded that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had previously lauded his performance. She questioned the motives behind the ongoing criticism, asking, "Who are you actually weakening?"

Regarding the PPP's position in the coalition, Rehman stated that the central executive committee would decide on future actions, emphasizing that the party did not wish to destabilize the government. However, she made it clear that the PPP would not be expected to "manage your houses and promote your business" without mutual respect and cooperation.

The escalating discord between the PPP and PML-N has raised concerns about the stability of the ruling coalition and the functioning of parliamentary proceedings. Both parties have been urged to address their differences constructively to ensure effective governance.
