KARACHI: The Sindh government has officially abolished charged parking in all 25 towns of Karachi, turning Mayor Murtaza Wahab’s vision of free public parking into a citywide policy.

According to a notification issued by the Local Government Department, a complete ban has been placed on collecting parking fees on public roads across Karachi. The directive mandates that all town municipal corporations implement the order without delay.

While the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) had previously suspended road-based parking fees under its jurisdiction, this latest move extends the policy to all town-level administrations in the city.

As per the notification, parking charges will only be allowed in designated parking plazas, private plots, or specific areas managed by municipal councils. Any other form of charged parking on public roads is now considered illegal.

The government has also initiated a citywide campaign to ensure the strict enforcement of the new directive. Municipal commissioners have been tasked with monitoring implementation, and those failing to comply will face disciplinary action.

The decision, taken under the directives of the Chief Minister, is aimed at protecting citizens from exploitation and ensuring fair use of public spaces, officials said.
