KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has directed an inquiry into massive funds spent on road cutting across Karachi.
Official documents show that the Sui Southern Gas Company disbursed around Rs 13.43 billion to 20 towns for road cutting work. New Karachi Town Municipal Corporation received the highest allocation of Rs 3.55 billion, followed by North Nazimabad with Rs 2.35 billion. Lyari was given Rs 1.02 billion, Jinnah Town Rs 730 million, and Malir Town Rs 620 million, while several other towns, including Saddar, Landhi, Shah Faisal, Orangi, Baldia, Korangi, and Chanesar, received hundreds of millions.
When questioned, officials claimed most of the roads had been repaired, but no visible reconstruction was found. The chief minister made it clear that towns must use the allocated funds for building and repairing roads and warned against misuse of resources.
The provincial government confirmed that nearly Rs 14 billion had been provided for road cutting in Karachi and pledged strict oversight to ensure accountability.
Meanwhile, heavy rains this week once again exposed the fragile condition of the city’s infrastructure, with several roads, underpasses, and key routes left damaged and submerged, leaving commuters in distress.
