KARACHI: Senior provincial minister Sharjeel Memon on Thursday said the Sindh government is fully alert and prepared to tackle any flood contingency.

Speaking to the media, he stated that all necessary preparations have been made to manage the situation, even in case of simultaneous rainfall and floodwater inflows. He added that the provincial government is closely monitoring the flow of floodwaters entering Sindh, stressing that there is currently no emergency in the province.

The minister noted that People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has been in regular contact with the Sindh chief minister and other ministers regarding the water situation. “We are ready to respond effectively and minimize possible losses,” he said.

Recent weeks have seen devastating floods in Punjab following extremely heavy rainfall and water releases by India into the Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers. The Indus River, Sindh’s lifeline, has so far remained below dangerous levels. However, floodwaters from Punjab will ultimately discharge into the Indus, raising its levels as it enters Sindh.

Currently, a low flood is reported at all three barrages in Sindh — Guddu, Sukkur, and Kotri — but authorities expect rising water levels in the coming days.
