KARACHI: At least five people, including three women, were injured on Friday when a six-storey residential building collapsed in the Baghdadi area of Lyari, citing rescue officials.
The building suddenly gave way, trapping residents under the rubble. Rescue teams rushed to the scene and began emergency operations to locate and extract survivors. So far, five individuals have been rescued and shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Officials confirmed that the collapse also caused structural damage to an adjacent building, raising fears of further instability in the area. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, as authorities continue efforts to locate any others trapped beneath the debris.
The cause of the collapse has not yet been officially determined, but concerns over building safety have intensified following similar incidents in the city.
Just four days ago, another six-storey building in Karachi’s Kharadar area experienced a partial collapse. In that case, a rooftop water tank fell through the inter-building corridor, damaging staircases and stranding residents on upper floors. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and rescue teams successfully evacuated all those trapped.
Authorities have urged building owners and developers to ensure structural safety and comply with construction regulations to prevent further incidents.
Residents in densely populated areas like Lyari and Kharadar are particularly vulnerable, where many older residential buildings show signs of structural wear and poor maintenance.
Emergency teams remain on high alert as the rescue operation continues into the evening, and authorities are expected to launch a formal investigation into the cause of the collapse.
