Tensions in the Middle East have surged following Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s declaration that Iran will show “no mercy” toward Israel’s leadership. His remarks, posted on X, came shortly after former U.S. President Donald Trump demanded Iran’s “unconditional surrender” and suggested the U.S. could assassinate Khamenei “easily,” though he claimed there were no current plans to do so.

The conflict has intensified, with Iran and Israel exchanging missile strikes. Israeli officials reported two barrages of Iranian missiles early Wednesday, while Iran claimed to have shot down an Israeli Hermes drone. Thousands are fleeing cities across both countries, including Tehran and Tel Aviv, as fears of full-scale war grow.

Israel reportedly struck over 20 targets in Tehran overnight using 50 fighter jets, targeting missile production and military facilities. Iran’s media reported ongoing cyberattacks from Israel and arrests of suspected Mossad agents accused of spreading unrest online. In Rey, south of Tehran, gunmen allegedly linked to Israel clashed with Iranian forces.

Meanwhile, Trump’s rhetoric has fueled uncertainty. On social media, he warned Iran that U.S. patience was “wearing thin,” though he denied immediate plans to strike Khamenei. His administration is considering direct strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities and has deployed more fighter jets to the region.

Khamenei's influence is reportedly weakened following the deaths of top advisers in Israeli strikes. Cybersecurity lockdowns have been imposed across Iran’s government.

Israel, which began its largest-ever air campaign on Friday, says Iran is nearing nuclear weapon capability. Though Tehran denies seeking nuclear arms, the UN nuclear watchdog has found Iran in breach of non-proliferation obligations. Israeli strikes have reportedly damaged the Natanz enrichment facility, and Israel now claims partial control of Iranian airspace.
