WASHINGTION: U.S. President Donald Trump said he wants a “real end” to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran rather than a temporary ceasefire, as the two arch-rivals continued exchanging fire for a fifth consecutive day on Tuesday.

The remarks came amid Israel’s expanding military campaign, which has now extended beyond Gaza into Iran. Following months of relentless bombardment in Gaza—including attacks on hospitals, homes, and infrastructure—Israel launched a series of large-scale airstrikes targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, military installations, and civilian areas. The strikes, part of a broader operation codenamed Rising Lion, have reportedly killed high-ranking Iranian commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians.

Israeli officials maintain that the attacks aim to deter Iran’s nuclear ambitions. However, Tehran has repeatedly denied pursuing nuclear weapons, insisting its uranium enrichment program is solely for peaceful, civilian use.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump emphasized the need for a comprehensive resolution to the crisis. “I want a real end to the nuclear problem with Iran—not just a ceasefire,” Trump was quoted as saying by CBS journalist Jennifer Jacobs in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

He further hinted at the possibility of future diplomatic engagement, saying, “I may,” when asked if he would send U.S. Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff or Vice President JD Vance to engage with Iran. “It depends what happens when I get back,” he added.

Trump also warned that the U.S. would “come down so hard if they [Iran] do anything to our people.”
