HOUSTON: Former Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has sparked debate among football fans after appearing to downplay Cristiano Ronaldo’s impressive performance in Portugal’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ronaldo, 41, delivered a strong response to recent criticism by scoring twice in the first half of Portugal’s dominant group-stage win in Houston. The goals marked another historic milestone for the veteran forward, who became Portugal’s highest-ever World Cup scorer with 10 goals, surpassing legendary striker Eusebio.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner had faced scrutiny following Portugal’s disappointing 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he failed to register a shot on target. After the victory over Uzbekistan, Ronaldo celebrated passionately and declared, “I’m back,” while later describing the previous week as a difficult period in which he felt as though he had “already retired from football.”

However, Ibrahimovic was not impressed by the statement. Speaking as a pundit on Fox Sports, the former AC Milan and Manchester United striker suggested Ronaldo’s achievement should be viewed in context.

“It was a game to score. It was a game for Portugal to score a lot of goals,” Ibrahimovic said. “And his message? I thought he never left. I don’t know why he says ‘I’m back’.”

The comments quickly drew strong reactions from Ronaldo’s supporters on social media. Many fans accused Ibrahimovic of trying to diminish the Portuguese star’s achievement, with some labeling him Ronaldo’s “biggest hater.” Others argued that the remarks overlooked the significance of Ronaldo’s record-breaking accomplishment on football’s biggest stage.

Ronaldo’s performance came after comparisons were made with fellow global stars, including Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland, who had all impressed in their respective matches.

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez praised Ronaldo after the game, calling him “an icon and a role model.” Martinez highlighted not only the striker’s goals but also his overall contribution, including chance creation and leadership on the field.

Ronaldo scored in the sixth and 39th minutes before goals from Nuno Mendes, an own goal, and Rafael Leão completed Portugal’s commanding victory and strengthened their position in the tournament.
