As cybercrime continues to rise in Pakistan, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched a fresh public awareness campaign, urging citizens to adopt stronger cybersecurity practices to safeguard their digital devices, personal information, and important documents from hackers, scammers, and online fraudsters.
The authority has released detailed Device Management guidelines, emphasizing that simple security measures can significantly reduce the risk of cyberattacks, identity theft, financial fraud, and data breaches. With millions of Pakistanis relying on smartphones, computers, digital banking, cloud storage, and social media, the PTA says protecting personal devices has become more important than ever.
According to the PTA, users should secure all smartphones, tablets, laptops, and computers with strong passwords or biometric authentication, including fingerprint or facial recognition. These features make it much harder for unauthorized users to access sensitive personal and financial information if a device is lost or stolen.
The regulator also advised citizens to keep their devices updated by installing the latest operating system updates and security patches. Regular software updates help fix vulnerabilities that cybercriminals commonly exploit to infect devices with malware or gain unauthorized access.
To prevent permanent data loss, the PTA has recommended regularly backing up important documents, photos, videos, and other files to secure cloud storage or an external hard drive. This ensures valuable information can be recovered in case of cyberattacks, hardware failure, or accidental deletion.
The guidelines further encourage parents and users to utilize screen-time management features and restrict access to specific applications. Built-in parental controls can help manage children's online activities and block inappropriate content, promoting safer internet usage.
For added security, the PTA has urged smartphone users to activate Apple's Find My iPhone or Google's Find My Device services. These location-tracking tools enable users to locate misplaced devices, remotely lock them, or erase personal data if the device is stolen.
The authority also issued a strong warning to anyone planning to sell, exchange, or repair a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Before handing over any device, users should perform a complete factory reset to erase all personal data, preventing unauthorized access or misuse of sensitive information.
The awareness campaign also encourages the public to stay informed through PTA's official social media platforms and seek guidance through the PTA Digital Assistant helpline (0315-0055055) for cybersecurity-related information and support.
Cybersecurity experts continue to stress that users should avoid clicking suspicious links, download apps only from trusted sources, and remain cautious of phishing emails and fake websites designed to steal passwords and financial information.
