KARACHI: The federal government has announced a reduction in electricity prices by Rs1.99 per unit under the quarterly tariff adjustment (QTA) mechanism, offering significant relief to consumers across Pakistan. The latest NEPRA notification states that the reduced electricity tariff will remain effective for three months, from June to August 2026.
According to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), the electricity tariff reduction has been approved under the quarterly review for the period from January to March 2026. The adjustment is expected to provide a cumulative financial benefit of approximately Rs67.17 billion to electricity consumers nationwide.
The relief applies to all categories of electricity consumers, including K-Electric consumers. However, lifeline consumers, prepaid consumers, and those billed under the incremental consumption package will not be eligible for the adjustment. Officials said the reduction reflects the impact of multiple tariff revisions incorporated through the quarterly tariff adjustment process.
The latest cut in electricity prices in Pakistan comes as the government continues efforts to reduce the financial burden on households and businesses facing rising living and operational costs. Consumers are expected to see lower electricity bills during the summer months when power consumption typically increases due to higher temperatures.
Meanwhile, the government is also working on a new Solar Wheeling Policy aimed at promoting renewable energy and reducing electricity costs for consumers and businesses. The proposed policy, also referred to as the Energy Wheeling Policy, will allow individuals and companies to generate solar power at one location and utilize energy credits at another location through the national grid.
The initiative is expected to benefit property owners who have access to land in rural areas but operate businesses or reside in urban centers where installing solar systems may be difficult or expensive. The policy could encourage greater investment in solar energy projects while supporting Pakistan’s transition toward cleaner and more affordable energy sources.
Following a recent meeting with the business community, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif informed business leaders that the government was actively developing a comprehensive solar wheeling framework. Business representatives welcomed the move, saying it could lower energy costs, improve energy efficiency, and provide long-term benefits for industries and commercial consumers.
Energy experts believe that both the electricity tariff reduction and the upcoming solar wheeling policy could provide meaningful relief to consumers while strengthening Pakistan’s energy sector and supporting economic growth.
