A Pediatrician’s Guide to Navigating the Digital World
By Dr. Syed Kashan Ali

As a pediatrician, I hear questions about social media daily. Parents are rightly concerned about its impact on their children’s well-being. Here are answers to some of the most common questions I receive.

Q1: At what age is it appropriate for my child to get their first social media account?

A: This is the number one question. While most platforms require users to be at least 13, age is less important than maturity. Before saying "yes," ask yourself: Is my child responsible? Can they handle rejection or unkind comments? Do they understand the concept of a digital footprint? A good first step is to have them use a family-friendly app with heavy parental oversight before moving to major platforms. The key is gradual, guided independence.

Q2: How much screen time is too much?

A: Rather than fixating on a strict number of minutes, focus on balance. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends creating a Family Media Plan. The most important rules are: 1) No screens during meals, and 2) No screens in the bedroom at night. Ensure social media use doesn’t replace essential activities like sleep, physical play, homework, and face-to-face family time.

Q3: My child says social media is essential for their social life. How can I limit it without making them a social outcast?

A: Validate their feelings—it’s true that much of teen social life happens online. The goal isn’t elimination, but management. Work with your child to set boundaries. For example, you might agree on "phone-free" times, like during homework or an hour before bed. Encourage and facilitate real-world social interactions, like having friends over, to show them that connection exists beyond a screen.

Q4: What are the biggest mental health risks I should be aware of?

A: The two primary concerns are social comparison and fear of missing out (FOMO). Curated feeds can make kids feel their own lives are less exciting or that they don’t measure up physically or socially. This can contribute to anxiety and low self-esteem. Also, be vigilant about cyberbullying, which can be relentless because it follows a child home. Have open conversations about these pressures and let your child know they can always talk to you if they see something upsetting.

Q5: How can I keep my child safe from strangers and inappropriate content?

A: Safety starts with communication, not just surveillance.

· Privacy Settings: Sit down with your child and set all accounts to the strictest privacy settings together.
· Stranger Danger 2.0: Teach them to never accept friend requests from people they don’t know in real life and to never share personal information like their school, address, or phone number.
· Open Door Policy: Make it a rule that you will be their friend or follower on all platforms. This isn’t about spying, but about being present. Most importantly, assure them that if they see something disturbing or are contacted by a stranger, they won’t be punished for telling you.

Q6: What are the potential benefits of social media? It can’t be all bad, right?

A: Absolutely. When used positively, social media can help kids explore interests, connect with peers who share similar hobbies (especially valuable for those with niche interests), find supportive communities, and even develop creativity and technical skills. The key is guiding them toward these positive uses.

Q7: What is the most important thing I can do as a parent?

A: Talk early and talk often. Don’t wait for a problem to arise. Start having age-appropriate conversations about digital citizenship as soon as your child starts using a device. Model the behavior you want to see—put your own phone away during family time. Your involvement and open communication are the most powerful tools you have to help your child navigate the digital world safely and healthily.
