ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of National Food Security & Research (MNFSR) on Wednesday announced that the government has officially fixed the ex-mill price of sugar at Rs. 165 per kilogram, with the maximum retail price capped at Rs. 175 per kilogram.

The decision was made in a meeting chaired by Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain and attended by stakeholders, including representatives of the sugar mills. Contrary to some media reports suggesting an inconclusive outcome, the ministry clarified that a clear and firm agreement on pricing was reached.

In a press statement, MNFSR rejected claims that the meeting failed to produce results, affirming that both the ex-mill and retail prices were finalized during discussions with the sugar industry.

The ministry emphasized that this move is aimed at curbing profiteering and ensuring affordability for consumers, especially in light of rising prices in open markets. Despite the fixed rates, sugar prices in major cities, including Rawalpindi and Islamabad, reportedly continue to soar due to supply shortages and hoarding.

The government has warned that strict action will be taken against those selling sugar above the notified price and called on provincial authorities to ensure compliance across markets.
