KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced that all public and private schools in Karachi will remain closed on Wednesday following relentless monsoon rains that brought daily life to a halt.

Sindh Education Minister Sardar Shah said the decision was made after reviewing forecasts of continued heavy rainfall in the city. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warned that the next 48 hours are critical, with further downpours expected even after the current spell that has already inundated much of the metropolis.

The severe rains left roads submerged, making travel nearly impossible. Many schoolchildren were unable to return home for hours, leaving families distressed. Major arteries such as Sharea Faisal and University Road remain waterlogged, while several inner-city roads are also under several feet of water.

The torrential downpour has triggered urban flooding across Karachi, paralyzing traffic, shutting businesses, and disrupting electricity in multiple neighbourhoods. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, as commuters remain stranded in flooded areas including Malir. The situation has drawn comparisons to the catastrophic 2022 rains, which similarly crippled the city’s infrastructure and caused widespread hardship.
