LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat to personally teach one class every week at a public school as part of efforts to strengthen the province’s education system and improve learning standards.
The directive was issued during a special meeting on school education, where the chief minister reviewed ongoing education reforms and discussed measures to enhance transparency, digital governance, and student enrolment across Punjab.
Maryam Nawaz instructed officials to review the digital registration mechanism for private schools and prepare recommendations for bringing tuition centres under a formal registration system. She also ordered the development of a digital mapping mechanism to monitor tuition centres across the province, ensuring better regulation and improved educational oversight.
During the meeting, officials informed the chief minister that the government had successfully achieved its target of enrolling 4.3 million students in public schools within two years and four months. The milestone was described as the highest verified enrolment recorded in Punjab’s government schools in recent years, reflecting the impact of ongoing education initiatives.
The chief minister also approved mandatory digital salary payments for teachers working under the Punjab Education Foundation (PEF). Under the new policy, bank accounts will be opened for approximately 138,000 PEF teachers to ensure transparent and efficient salary disbursement while promoting financial inclusion.
Officials also presented a detailed briefing on the Punjab School Reforms Programme (PSRP), highlighting progress in infrastructure, governance, and educational outcomes. The meeting further explored opportunities to generate additional revenue for the school education sector through innovative strategies.
Maryam Nawaz directed the relevant departments to prepare a comprehensive revenue generation plan aimed at supporting long-term education reforms and improving facilities in government schools across Punjab.
The latest decisions underscore the Punjab government’s focus on modernising the education sector through digital transformation, improved accountability, and stronger leadership participation, with the goal of delivering quality education to millions of students throughout the province.
