ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Wednesday a major initiative aimed at modernizing Pakistan’s agricultural sector by sending 300 students to China for specialized training in advanced farming techniques.

Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad, the prime minister emphasized that empowering the youth, especially in agriculture, is key to Pakistan’s future development. He stated that 300 students, selected from a pool of 1,000 agricultural graduates, will be sent to China to study modern agricultural practices and technologies.

“These students are not just going abroad to study—they are going to become the architects of our rural transformation,” said PM Shehbaz. “We aim to give our youth the tools to modernize farming and improve productivity across Pakistan.”

He added that upon returning, the students will be encouraged to start their own agri-businesses, particularly in rural areas, with full support from the government. This includes access to subsidies, modern equipment, and low-interest loans to help launch their ventures.

Praising China as Pakistan’s closest ally, PM Shehbaz expressed deep appreciation to Chinese President Xi Jinping for agreeing to host the Pakistani students. He recalled his visit to an agricultural university in Xi’s hometown, noting the advanced facilities and the potential for Pakistan to benefit from China’s agricultural expertise.

“We want our young minds to learn from China’s successful agricultural model and bring that knowledge back to drive growth and innovation here at home,” he said.

The prime minister also confirmed that students were selected from across the country—including all four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir—through a transparent and merit-based process.

Reaffirming the government’s focus on boosting agricultural capacity, PM Shehbaz said this initiative is part of a broader vision to ensure youth-led innovation and sustainable economic growth in Pakistan.

The programme is expected to not only strengthen Pakistan-China ties but also serve as a catalyst for transforming rural economies and enhancing the country’s agricultural exports
