KARACHI: The Sindh government has signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Google to advance digital journalism and expand IT training opportunities under the Peoples IT Program (PITP).

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah chaired the signing ceremony, highlighting the achievements of PITP, under which thousands of students have already obtained globally recognized IT skills. He noted that more than 4,300 graduates are now contributing to Pakistan’s economy, with special emphasis on women’s participation and rural representation.

Murad Ali Shah announced that Rs1.4 billion has been earmarked for PITP-II, through which 35,000 students will be trained in 12 cutting-edge technologies. Training will be conducted by top institutions, including NED University, Mehran University, and Sukkur IBA. Students from matriculation to graduation levels will be eligible to apply.

The second agreement covers the Google Digital Journalism Scholarship Initiative, developed in collaboration with Tech Valley. Under the “Digital Journalism 2.0” program, 1,000 scholarships will be offered to journalists, media students, and government spokespersons.

The chief minister described the partnership as a milestone in fostering credible journalism and promoting transparency. He added that the initiative would strengthen the media’s role in curbing misinformation and countering fake news.

Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon emphasized that the program would enhance responsible media practices, equipping journalists with essential digital skills. He said the collaboration reflects the province’s commitment to innovation, education, and a stronger information ecosystem.
