ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has confirmed three new cases of wild poliovirus, raising the total number of polio infections in 2025 to 17, the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health reported on Sunday.

The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) stated that two new cases were detected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, specifically in the districts of North Waziristan and Lakki Marwat, both known polio hotspots. The third case was reported in the Umerkot district of Sindh.

Authorities are taking emergency measures to contain the virus’s spread, but the continuous appearance of new cases remains a serious public health concern.

“The majority of the 17 confirmed cases this year have been reported from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which remains the epicentre of polio transmission,” said the NEOC.

Health officials have reiterated calls for parents to ensure their children receive polio vaccinations during every nationwide immunisation campaign to help eradicate the disease.
