RAWALPINDI: Pakistan’s military leadership has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the country’s rightful share of water under the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), amid growing tensions with India over the decades-old water-sharing agreement.

The pledge came during the 276th Corps Commanders’ Conference held at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, chaired by Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the forum reviewed India’s recent stance on the Indus Waters Treaty and reiterated Pakistan’s determination to protect its water rights in line with government directives.

The military’s statement emphasized that all necessary measures would be taken to ensure Pakistan continues to receive its rightful share of water under the treaty. The commitment follows renewed concerns after India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty in April last year following the Pahalgam attack, prompting Pakistan to intensify diplomatic and legal efforts to defend its interests.

The forum also discussed regional security challenges, expressing concern over what it described as the use of Afghan Taliban-controlled territory by Indian-backed militant groups to launch attacks inside Pakistan. Military commanders stressed that lasting regional peace depends on preventing militant organizations from operating across the border and reaffirmed Pakistan’s right to continue intelligence-based counterterrorism operations under Operation Ghazab lil Haq.

In addition, the conference reviewed the country’s internal security situation, highlighting the need for stronger governance in vulnerable regions to curb terrorism and criminal networks. The military leadership warned that hostile hybrid warfare, misinformation campaigns, and external interference aimed at destabilizing Pakistan would be met with a firm and coordinated response.

The commanders also reiterated Pakistan’s support for a peaceful resolution of regional disputes through dialogue while reaffirming the country’s longstanding position on Jammu and Kashmir. They maintained that sustainable peace in South Asia requires the implementation of United Nations resolutions granting the Kashmiri people their right to self-determination.

The conference concluded with a review of the armed forces’ operational readiness and paid tribute to the sacrifices of military personnel, law enforcement agencies, and civilians. The leadership expressed confidence in the armed forces’ preparedness to defend Pakistan’s sovereignty, protect national interests, and address emerging conventional and hybrid security threats.
