LAHORE: In a significant development linked to the May 9, 2023 arson and rioting incidents, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore has ordered the confiscation of properties belonging to four senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders — Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Omar Sarfraz Cheema, Mian Mahmood-ur-Rasheed, and Ejaz Chaudhry.
The court sentenced each leader to 10 years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs. 600,000. Jail warrants have been issued, and orders for the seizure of their assets have been formally passed. These convictions relate to two separate cases of arson filed at the Shadman and Sarwar Road police stations, in which the accused were found guilty of inciting violent protests and damaging both public and private property.
According to the detailed verdict released by the court, the leaders were proven to have participated in, and instigated, acts of violence during the protests that erupted after the arrest of PTI Chairman in May 2023. The events led to widespread unrest and attacks on military installations and other key infrastructure.
The ATC has directed the jail superintendent to ensure immediate enforcement of the sentences and the transfer of the convicted individuals to prison. The ruling marks a pivotal moment in the legal aftermath of the May 9 unrest.
