Fans pay tribute to legendary actress Shamim Ara

Nine years after her passing, the memory of legendary Pakistani film actress Shamim Ara remains strong in the hearts of fans across the country.

Born in Aligarh in 1938 as Putli Bai, she adopted the screen name Shamim Ara as she embarked on her journey into the film industry. Although her debut film Kunwari Bewa didn’t fare well at the box office, her distinctive style and charm quickly caught the attention of audiences and filmmakers alike, paving the way for a prolific career.

Her breakthrough came with the 1960 film Saheli, which earned her the prestigious Nigar Award and solidified her place among the industry’s top talents. Over the years, Shamim Ara starred in more than 80 films, including the landmark Naila, Pakistan’s first color film. Her acclaimed performances in classics such as Devdas, Saiqa, Lakhon Mein Ek, and Anarkali are still remembered today.

She shared a popular on-screen pairing with actor Waheed Murad and delivered a memorable performance in the cinematic adaptation of Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s poem Mujh Se Pehli Si Mohabbat in the film Qaidi.

Her final acting role was in the 1989 Punjabi movie Tez Maar Khan. Transitioning to direction, she made her mark behind the camera with successful films like Jiyo Aur Jeene Do, Playboy, Miss Hong Kong, and Miss Colombo.

As Pakistan’s first successful female film director, Shamim Ara earned six Nigar Awards for acting and three for directing, leaving a lasting legacy in both performance and filmmaking.
