KARACHI: In a major step to tackle urban flooding and improve municipal services ahead of the monsoon season 2026, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced a large-scale drain cleaning operation across the city. The initiative aims to strengthen the Karachi drainage system and ensure smooth water flow during the expected heavy rains.

The decision was made during a meeting on development and municipal services chaired by the Mayor of Karachi. Officials reviewed preparations for the upcoming monsoon season and discussed measures to minimize the impact of heavy rainfall on residents.

According to a KMC spokesperson, the city administration has allocated Rs600 million for the cleaning of major drainage channels. The tendering process for the project is set to begin from Monday, allowing authorities to start work before the arrival of monsoon rains.

The allocated funds have been distributed among various districts of Karachi to ensure comprehensive cleaning of drains and nullahs. District Central has received Rs68 million, while District West and Keamari have each been allocated Rs70 million. District South-I will receive Rs56 million, and District South-II has been assigned Rs65 million.

In addition, District East has been allocated Rs73 million, Korangi Rs70 million, and Malir Rs58 million. Other key locations across Karachi will receive Rs74 million and Rs63 million respectively to support drainage maintenance and infrastructure improvements.

The Mayor of Karachi emphasized that drain cleaning Karachi operations must continue alongside ongoing Karachi development projects. He directed officials to complete the work on time and ensure that all major drains remain clear before the peak monsoon period.

Experts believe that effective cleaning of drainage channels can significantly reduce the risk of urban flooding Karachi residents often face during heavy rains. Poor drainage has historically caused traffic disruptions, property damage, and inconvenience for thousands of citizens.

With Karachi weather forecasts indicating a hot and humid period followed by monsoon activity, authorities are urging departments to coordinate efforts and maintain readiness. The latest Karachi news highlights the city administration’s focus on preventive measures to protect infrastructure, improve public safety, and reduce rain-related challenges during the monsoon season Pakistan is expected to experience in the coming months.
