The Lahore Education Authority has completed its inquiry into the tragic roof collapse at a tuition centre in the Kahna area, revealing that the facility was operating from an unregistered residential house. The devastating incident claimed the lives of 14 children, while several others, including a teacher, sustained injuries.

According to the inquiry report, the tuition centre was not registered with any government authority and was being run privately from a home. Officials stated that the female teacher conducted tuition classes independently, with most of the students reportedly being her relatives.

The report found that 25 to 30 children were present inside the tuition centre when the roof suddenly collapsed, trapping students and the teacher under the debris. Rescue teams responded immediately, recovering victims from the rubble. Authorities confirmed that five children and one female teacher were injured and are currently in stable condition.

The completed inquiry report has now been submitted to the district administration, which will decide on the next course of action based on its findings.

Chief Executive Officer of the Lahore Education Authority, Tariq Mahmood, said there is currently no formal registration mechanism for tuition centres operating from private homes. He explained that such home-based tutoring facilities fall outside the Education Department’s existing regulatory framework, highlighting a major gap in oversight.

Meanwhile, Lahore police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) over the incident. According to the FIR, the loss of lives resulted from alleged negligence and unsafe construction practices. Investigators stated that tuition classes were being conducted beneath a structurally weak roof while repair work was underway on the upper portion of the building.

Police believe the roof failed after being unable to bear the additional construction load, causing it to collapse onto the classroom below. The FIR names those responsible for allowing educational activities to continue despite the hazardous conditions.

DIG Operations Faisal Kamran confirmed that five individuals, including the building owner, have been taken into custody as part of the investigation. He said legal proceedings will be initiated against anyone found responsible after the inquiry is completed.

The Kahna tragedy has raised serious concerns over the safety and regulation of privately operated tuition centres across Lahore. Education experts and parents are calling for stricter oversight, mandatory registration, and regular building safety inspections to prevent similar incidents and ensure the protection of children attending private learning facilities.
