Legendary Indian actor Dharmendra Deol, popularly known simply as Dharmendra, passed away on Monday in Mumbai at the age of 89, Filmfare reported. The iconic star had been battling health complications, including respiratory issues that required hospitalisation earlier this month. His family had previously dismissed rumours of his death circulating on November 10, and he was discharged soon after, but his condition reportedly worsened in recent days.

With a prolific career spanning more than six decades, Dharmendra appeared in over 300 films and became one of Indian cinema’s most beloved and influential figures. Known for his versatility, he delivered memorable performances in classics such as *Sholay*, *Seeta Aur Geeta*, and *Chupke Chupke*. He made his acting debut in 1960, and his final film, *Ikkis*, is scheduled to release in December.

Over the years, Dharmendra received numerous accolades, including the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, a lifetime honour from the State of New Jersey, and India’s Padma Bhushan, the nation’s third-highest civilian award. He also briefly entered politics, serving as a member of parliament from Bikaner after being elected in 2004.

The actor is survived by his wife, veteran actress Hema Malini, and his children Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Vijeta Deol, Ajita Deol, Esha Deol, and Ahana Deol.

Following the news of his passing, tributes from across the Indian film industry poured in. Filmmaker Karan Johar described his death as “the end of an era,” calling him a “massive megastar” and “a bonafide legend of Indian cinema.” Actor Boman Irani remembered Dharmendra’s “rugged handsomeness” and his ability to balance intensity, humour, and kindness. Designer Manish Malhotra called it a “huge loss to Indian cinema,” while actor Kajol wrote, “The OG of the Good Man is gone.”

Farhan Akhtar also offered condolences, thanking Dharmendra for “six decades of entertainment” and praising his warmth and generosity.

Indian media reported that Hema Malini and Esha Deol were seen arriving at Mumbai’s Pawan Hans Crematorium amid tight security. Major film personalities including Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Aamir Khan were also spotted paying their respects as the industry mourned one of its greatest stars.
