NDMA issues flood alert ahead of pre-monsoon rains

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide weather advisory, warning citizens to remain vigilant as intermittent pre-monsoon rains are expected across Pakistan from June 28 to July 3.

The authority cautioned that the combination of intense heat and incoming rainfall could significantly increase the risk of floods, landslides, and glacier-related disasters in northern regions.

According to NDMA officials, soaring temperatures have already accelerated glacier melting in the country's mountainous areas. The expected rainfall is likely to further raise water levels in rivers, streams, and glacial lakes across Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), increasing the possibility of dangerous flooding.

The authority warned that vulnerable mountainous districts face an elevated threat of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), flash floods, and landslides due to unstable weather conditions during the forecast period.

Residents, tourists, and travellers have been advised to exercise extreme caution in high-risk districts, including Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu, Shigar, Ghanche, Kharmang, Astore, Diamer, Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, and Swat. NDMA urged people to avoid unnecessary travel in these areas, particularly near rivers, streams, glacial lakes, and riverbanks where sudden flooding could occur without warning.

The disaster management authority also encouraged the public to immediately report any unusual water flow, landslides, or hazardous conditions to local authorities to help prevent loss of life and property.

Meanwhile, Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) across the country have been placed on high alert. Emergency response teams have been directed to ensure operational readiness, maintain rapid response capabilities, and coordinate closely with local administrations in case of weather-related emergencies.

The NDMA weather alert comes as Pakistan enters the pre-monsoon season, a period often associated with heavy rainfall and natural disasters in northern and hilly regions. Authorities emphasized that timely precautionary measures, public awareness, and coordinated emergency planning remain essential to reducing the impact of the expected weather system.

NDMA advised citizens to stay informed through official weather updates, follow safety instructions issued by local authorities, and avoid risky activities in vulnerable areas. Officials stressed that preparedness and public cooperation are critical to minimizing the risks posed by Pakistan pre-monsoon rains, glacier melting Pakistan, and the heightened flash flood warning during the coming days.
