KARACHI: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved a minor increase of Rs0.0796 per unit in electricity rates for October 2025. This hike, under the fuel cost adjustment (FCA) for August, applies to all power distribution companies, including K-Electric, except lifeline, EV charging, and prepaid customers.

Power firms had sought a higher raise of Rs0.19 per unit, but Nepra approved a lower adjustment to cover generation cost gaps. A technical member of Nepra criticized inefficiencies in the power sector, noting the open-cycle use of the Guddu 747MW plant added Rs956 million to costs. Part Load Adjustment Charges also jumped to Rs3.9 billion.

System inefficiencies and underuse of the HVDC system further burdened finances. The technical member issued a dissenting note, opposing the decision to pass inefficiency-related costs from the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) onto consumers already facing high bills.
