ISLAMABAD: In a significant step toward the development of Pakistan's maritime economy, China Overseas Ports Holding Company (COPHC) Chairman Professor Yu Bo presented a comprehensive business plan to establish a modern aquaculture industry in Gwadar.
The meeting, held on Wednesday, involved Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, who welcomed the initiative as a transformative opportunity for Pakistan’s coastal development.
Professor Yu Bo outlined COPHC’s strategic vision for developing a sustainable and technologically advanced aquaculture sector in Gwadar. The project aims to position the port city as a key node within the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), fostering growth in the blue economy. The minister lauded the project, emphasizing its potential to unlock Gwadar’s rich marine resources and transform it into a vital hub for seafood production, processing, and export.
Minister Chaudhry highlighted the economic benefits, stating that the project would not only generate significant employment but also attract investment and strengthen the local economy. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting industries that bring technology, infrastructure, and jobs to Pakistan's coastal regions. "We strongly support initiatives that help unlock the potential of our coastal economy," he added, assuring investors of full government support.
The minister also stressed the importance of building the necessary infrastructure to support the project, including reliable electricity, clean drinking water, and improved road connectivity. He pointed out that Gwadar’s favorable sea conditions and proximity to international markets make it an ideal location for aquaculture ventures. The plan includes developing hatcheries, seafood processing facilities, and sustainable aquaculture farms that meet global quality standards and boost exports.
Both parties agreed to continue collaborating through relevant government departments and technical experts to create viable models and policy frameworks for successful project implementation. Minister Chaudhry emphasized that this collaboration reflects a shared commitment to sustainable economic growth, environmental responsibility, and regional development.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs remains committed to supporting proposals that align with Pakistan’s long-term economic and environmental priorities, particularly those that leverage the full potential of the nation’s maritime resource
