KARACHI: Residents of Karachi are facing mounting financial pressure as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder prices have surged following severe and unannounced gas loadshedding across the city. The ongoing crisis has forced many households to shift from Sui gas to LPG for daily cooking needs, significantly increasing their monthly expenses.
According to local market reports, small iron LPG cylinders weighing between 2kg and 6kg are now being sold at prices ranging from Rs. 1,200 to Rs. 5,000, depending on availability and location. Citizens say the sharp rise in LPG prices in Karachi has made it difficult for low and middle-income families to manage basic household requirements.
Many areas in Karachi are experiencing little to no Sui gas supply, particularly during peak cooking hours. This shortage has left residents with no choice but to rely on alternative energy sources. The growing dependence on LPG cylinders has further driven demand, contributing to the price hike.
In addition to the gas crisis, citizens are also struggling with frequent electricity outages and water shortages. To cope with these challenges, many households are installing solar panels to ensure uninterrupted power supply and purchasing water tankers due to irregular municipal water availability. These additional expenses are placing an even heavier burden on already strained household budgets.
Residents have voiced strong concerns over the worsening utility situation, criticizing the lack of effective government intervention. Many believe that the authorities have failed to provide relief despite the ongoing crisis affecting millions in the city.
“We are managing everything on our own. What is the government doing for the people?” said one frustrated resident, highlighting the growing dissatisfaction among citizens.
