KARACHI: Police have arrested the son of slain Lyari gangster Abdul Rehman alias Rehman Dakait during an operation in Karachi, authorities confirmed on Monday. The arrest has once again drawn attention to the long-running criminal legacy linked to gang violence in the Lyari area.

According to a police statement, Kalakot police apprehended Jibran, son of Abdul Rehman alias Rehman Dakait, during a targeted action within their jurisdiction. Law enforcement officials said that one illegal pistol was also recovered from the suspect’s possession at the time of arrest, further strengthening the case against him.

Police described the arrested suspect as a habitual criminal with a history of repeated involvement in unlawful activities. Officials revealed that Jibran had previously been arrested and sent to prison in multiple cases, indicating his continued engagement in criminal conduct despite earlier legal action.

Records show that at least two First Information Reports were registered against him at Kalakot police station between 2023 and 2024. These cases were related to street crime and weapons possession, according to police sources familiar with the matter. Investigators are now reviewing his past activities to determine whether he maintained active links with criminal networks operating in Lyari.

Abdul Rehman alias Rehman Dakait, one of Karachi’s most notorious gang leaders, was killed in a police encounter in 2009 along with three of his close associates. He was reportedly involved in more than 80 criminal cases, including murder, extortion, kidnapping, and armed violence. Rehman Dakait was a central figure in the violent gang wars that plagued Lyari for years, severely affecting law and order in the area.

In 2024, another son of Rehman Dakait was shot dead in what police described as an alleged encounter in Karachi. At the time, police said he was attempting to organise a new gang in Lyari and was involved in drug trafficking and kidnapping for ransom cases.

Law enforcement officials say the latest arrest reflects ongoing efforts to curb organised crime in Karachi, particularly in areas historically affected by gang activity. Police have reiterated their commitment to taking strict action against individuals involved in illegal weapons, repeat offenses, and attempts to revive criminal gangs in the city.
